What is Petroleum Jelly

In 1859, Robert Cheesebrough, then a 22-year-old chemist, traveled to Pennsylvania, where oil extraction had just begun. He visited oil wells and noticed that workers were using the leftover petroleum left on the drill to heal cuts and wounds caused by the work. Robert Cheesebrough took a sample of this magical substance to the laboratory and discovered that the gel had wound-healing properties.

Petroleum Jelly Production

Petroleum Jelly or Vaseline is made from crude oil and its production process is generally as follows: Using the diagenesis method, organic materials and mud are melted. In the next stage, crude oil is converted into petroleum oil in the refinery by extracting liquid hydrocarbons. It is purified using vacuum distillation and aeration, and then a wax-like bubble is formed using aeration.

This waxy liquid is called petroleum jelly. In the next stage, the gel, oil, and paraffin wax are melted together in a pot to obtain the consistency of the mixture. Then lanolin is added to the mixture. This substance is obtained from sheep wax and creates an elastic state in Vaseline. In the final stage, vitamin E is added to the product.

The resulting gel passes through filtration devices in three stages and its impurities are separated. Finally, Vaseline is packaged in polyethylene containers and marketed.
