Iran Ferrosilicon

Iran Ferrosilicon one of the most widely used alloy materials in the smelting and metallurgy industry is ferrosilicon, which is obtained from a combination of iron and silicon. Ferrosilicon is classified based on the percentage of silicon purity and aluminum impurity, which are introduced below:

Ferrosilicon with a purity of 75% silicon has a melting temperature of 1250 to 1300 degrees Celsius and a density of 2.8 g/cm3.

Uses: Ferrosilicon is used for oxidation in steel smelting to eliminate molten oxygen and prevent carbon burning. Ferrosilicon is used as an effective nucleator in smelting. Increasing resistance to oxidation at high temperatures (most ferritic and austenitic stainless steels use 1% silicon, grade 314 has 2% silicon). Strengthening the strength of steel through the solid state strengthening process with silicon.

Iran Ferrosilicon Applications

Ferrosilicon is used for oxidation in steelmaking to remove molten oxygen and prevent carbon burn. Ferro silicon is used as an effective nucleator in smelting. Increases resistance to oxidation at high temperatures (most ferritic and austenitic stainless steels contain 1% silicon, with grade 314 containing 2% silicon).

Strengthens steel through the solid state strengthening process with silicon. The silicon in ferrosilicon is also widely used in electrical steels used in transformers, electric motors and generators. For the production of other ferroalloys such as magnesium ferrosilicon.

Ferrosilicon Production:

Raw Materials:

Inorganic silica ore with a purity of between 96 and 99% SiO2, iron oxide (oxide shell), coke, electrode paste, and porous materials such as wood chips are used to produce ferrosilicon. After exploitation, inorganic silica is subjected to a grinding process to visually separate impurities from it.

The impurity that affects the quality of this raw material is the percentage of aluminum present in it, which reduces the absorption of ferrosilicon in the melt.

Required equipment:

Ferroalloy continuous arc furnace.
Coke briquetting unit.
Raw material conveyor belts.

Ferrosilicon casting and grinding line.

Melt transport ladles.

Dust collection equipment.

Production stages:

This process begins when the furnace is charged with specific proportions of the raw materials mentioned in the working arc furnace and due to the reduction of silica and iron oxide by coke at high temperature and the formation of melt in the lower parts of the furnace.

Iran Ferrosilicon melting arc furnaces are constantly forming melt based on their electrical power and capacity, for example, an arc furnace with a power of 17 MW is capable of producing 20 to 25 tons of molten ferrosilicon.

When the outlet valve of the ferrosilicon furnace is opened, the melt is transferred into the ladle and from there it is transferred to the bed or casting line and after solidification it is transferred to the crushing unit and divided into the desired sizes (3-10mm_10-60mm_10-80mm_10-120mm).

It should be noted that ferrosilicon in the 0.5-1.5mm size is also taken as a nucleator from the crushing waste.

By-product:

Microsilica is obtained from the dust fused in the ferrosilicon arc furnace. This material, which is in nanometer dimensions, has extensive uses in the refractory production, road construction and construction industries.

After extraction, this by-product is decarbonized in a step due to the presence of excessive carbon, and its carbon content is less than 6%.
