Carbon Black

Carbon Black

Project Description

Carbon Black

Carbon black is a special black chemical that is available in powder or grain form. This material is produced using fully controlled processes and contains more than 95% pure carbon. The black particles of this material range in size from 10 nm to approximately 500 nm. Depending on the manufacturing process, carbon black types vary in size, surface chemistry, porosity, and many other properties. It is used in various industries. By improving the physical, electrical and optical properties of different materials, This black powder of carbon gives a favorable performance to the final product.

Black carbon production process

It is produced by thermal decomposition method or partial combustion method using hydrocarbons such as oil or natural gas as raw material. The preferred raw material for most carbon black production processes is heavy oil with a high content of aromatic hydrocarbons. The aromatic form of carbon gives the highest ratio of carbon to hydrogen, thus maximizing available carbon and producing the highest yield. Theoretically, the higher the aromaticity, the more efficient the process. Unfortunately, as the number of compound rings increases, the material changes from a viscous liquid form to a solid bituminous form.

Therefore, in fact, the most suitable oils are those in which most of the carbon is in the form of materials containing three or four rings. The characteristics of black carbon vary depending on the manufacturing process and therefore it is classified based on the manufacturing process. The black soot produced by the furnace process (the most common method at present) is different from the black carbon produced by other processes.

Furnace Black Method

Among the latest developed processes of carbon black production is the black furnace method, which is the most common production method at present. This method is continuous and liquid and gas hydrocarbons are used as raw material and heat source respectively. When natural gas is available, the liquid feedstock is injected into a heat source, which is produced by the combustion of natural gas and heated air.

Since this process takes place at a very high temperature, the reaction is carried out in a furnace with a refractory lining. After the carbon black is formed, the process is quenched and quenched using water injection to prevent any unwanted secondary reactions. The charged carbon black gas is then passed through a heat exchanger for further cooling, while simultaneously heating the required process air.

A bag filter system separates black carbon particles from the gas stream. The gases produced by the reaction are combustible and, in most cases, are charged in the post-combustion stage so that the resulting heat can be used to dry carbon black or be burned in a boiler to produce steam. The black carbon collected by the filter has a very low bulk density, and depending on its application, it is usually pelletized or more condensed to make it easier to use.

It is produced by the furnace process, is converted into loose dense powder or dispersible pellets so that they can be easily transported. In the wet pelletizing process, water and a binding agent are used in a special mixer to turn carbon black into spherical pellets. Next, pellets are dried in rotary dryers. The binding agent will make the product resistant to erosion and will make it easy to transport.

Carbon Black Applications

Carbon black application as resin and film coloring materials, it has high coloring power and is thermally stable. Therefore, they are suitable for coloring resins and films that are formed by heat. Carbon powder black application as an electrical conductive agent. This particles have a graphite-type crystal structure that provides excellent electrical conductivity. Therefore, it  is widely used as a conductive filler and mixed with plastics, elastomers, paints, adhesives, films and pastes. For example, fuel caps and fuel lines in cars need electrical conductivity to prevent static. Therefore, It is used as an excellent antistatic agent in them. This powder application as materials related to electronic equipment  offers stable resistance. Therefore, it  used as an electronic equipment-related material in various display components, magnetic recording materials.

 Packing

It is normally packing in jumbo bags or 25 kg paper sacks.
