Caustic soda for Soap making uses a chemical process that converts fat, tallow, and vegetable oils into soap. In this method, oils and fats are first hydrolyzed or split using high pressure steam. This step separates fats into crude fatty acids and glycerin. Caustic soda comes in this step and the fatty acids are then purified by distillation and then neutralized by an alkaline substance (caustic soda) that produces soapy water.
